Step 3: Homework Assignment

1. Listen to this clip of music: Play Audio Clip  . Submit in written form a list of the rhythms played (in order) and the instruments used (in order). This music is from the CD “Ahlam Jasmin”.
2. Find a recorded taxim approximately 2 minutes in length and film yourself dancing to it as if it were a taxim in the middle of a classical oriental routine. Begin the video by stating the source of the music and identify the instrument. This should not be a film from an actual performance. You should film yourself in training clothes, not a costume.
3. Submit a video of yourself playing finger cymbals to these 3 rhythms:
   1. Saidi – Begin by stating the rhythm name and its Dums and Teks. Then play a cymbal pattern to this rhythm using the “clap” tone. Play that pattern consecutively at least 8 times. Choose another pattern that is appropriate for Saidi and play that pattern consecutively at least 8 times.
   2. Maksoum – Begin by stating the rhythm name and its Dums and Teks. Then play a cymbal pattern to this rhythm using the “bell” tone. Play the pattern consecutively at least 8 times. Choose another pattern that is appropriate for Maksoum and play that pattern consecutively at least 8 times.
   3. Beledi – Begin by stating the rhythm name, then state its Dums and Teks. Then play a cymbal pattern to this rhythm using the “bell” tone. Play the pattern consecutively at least 8 times. Choose another pattern that is appropriate for Beledi and play that pattern consecutively at least 8 times.
   4. Submit a video less than 3 minutes in length teaching how to make the “bell” tone and the “tick” tone, clearly noting the difference between the techniques. Assume the students you are teaching already know the basics of cymbal playing (that we covered in Step 2 Application).

Upload your documents to your favorite cloud storage provider and create a shared link. Once the link has been created, submit that link in the text box on the Homework Assignment.
